Mike Daisey on his latest show, The Trump Card, at Woolly Mammoth
DC Theatre Scene: As we hurl toward an unpredictable and increasingly surreal election in November, Donald Trump’s persona is hard to avoid. Endlessly looped on news broadcasts and grabbing headlines each day with his latest provocations, he has finally achieved the level of ubiquity that many suspect compelled him to join the race just over a year ago. But how much are we really digging into what drives the man – and what his success says about the current state of our political climate?

This new show is yet another current example of how modern events influence theatre and vice versa. The use of theatre in a time such as this monumentally important election to create social change is so great to see as it shows both the theatre community and society at large that although theatre may deal with plays and musicals, it doesn’t mean theatre artists are removed from the world. I am super interested to see what kind of messages people will take from a show like this. This show is not only about the current election, but about the way that it was able to occur, as it raises questions and makes the audience think about how society allowed this and what must have happened in the nation to not only allow Trump to run, but to make it this far (but hopefully not any farther). These are the kinds of messages I am interested in as a designer when thinking about an audience.
Theater can exist in many different states, but I believe it's most powerful and most interesting state is when it is used to create discussion of things we deal with in our lives. I refrained from using the word issues because I don't believe theater should take a stand in this form, it should lay the facts bare and drive you emotionally in both directions, because your decision on the issues should be yours alone, but if theater drives you to make that decision instead of sitting at home then it has served it purpose in that specific area.
