Work of Art

www.cmu.edu/news: While Cuba and the U.S. are renewing relations, Carnegie Mellon University faculty and students are working on a revival.

Cuba's National Arts Schools, known as the Instituto Superior de Arte, was conceived in 1960 by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara after the Cuban Revolution. The campus, which was to include five new schools on the grounds of the former Havana Country Club, was created to support and nurture Cuban artists and performers in drama, art, music, ballet and modern dance. But it never came to full fruition.

The scores for musicals just have this way of capturing an audience. The musicality and composition of some songs have the power to mesmerize audience member. One show that comes to mind where the music itself is truly mesmerizing and empowering is Next to Normal. The simplicity and the complexity of the music at the same time is just so beautiful and it has the power to tell a story all on its own. The other aspect of musical scores the have the power to impact an audience member is the lyrics. The lyrics of a show have the power to really make an audience member connect with the characters and their emotions. My favorite song form a musical right now is “Those You’ve Known” form Spring Awakening. It is so loaded with so many emotions. There is sadness for the loss of loved ones, but also the hope for continuing the memory of the loved ones lost. It is such a relatable song to the common human experience of life. Everyone experiences loss in their life and I think this song does a goes job at making an audience member connect with the feeling of loss Melchior is feeling while filling the audience with happiness while remembering the good times with the ones you’ve lost. “Now they’ll walk on my arm through the distant night and I won’t let them stray from my heart…Not gone” –Spring Awakening
