In A Maryland County, Taxing Student Actors In Pay To Play Plan

Arts Integrity Initiative: In an era of constrained school budgets, it is not all that unusual – albeit quite problematic in terms of diversity and equity – to find schools charging students and their parents “activity fees” to offset certain expenses, particularly in extracurricular pursuits, notably athletics. When the Board of Education of the Harford County Public Schools in Maryland voted on June 13 to impose a $100 per student activity fee on extracurricular drama programs in area high schools, and raised the fee charged to sports participants to the same rate (having previously been $50), it wasn’t, at a glance, necessarily seen as a targeted attack on the arts.

Every time i read another article about my county, my home, my schools district i can't help but wonder if the members of the board are regretting there decision, if they have realized that what they did was wrong. In under two weeks they made the national news twice, twice no one knows about harford county public school. Well they do now in two weeks the board tried to destroy my life and the lives of many other. I can name at least 10 people off the top of my head that are involved heavily in swimming and drama. Im one of them, the county tried to take away my only sport and heavily tax an activity that has changed my life. An activity i want to do for the rest of my life. Its pathetic and i just want the nightmare to be over but it never will be. Next year we have to right the pools again they gave us one year, one year to get a plan to figure out what was going to happen to the pools. We fought but the fight isn't over it will never be over. Then they attack drama and the best answer they can give us is we will consider again next year, next year. Im sorry but thats a year a year of a kids life they can be destroying that one kid that was going to turn to drama to help them to give them a new meaning of life, and the best answer the board can give them is we will consider next year. It may not seem like a big deal but its like saying to a patient sorry can't treat you this year we will reconsider next year. Its therapy, drama is a safe space for everyone. Im just glad this is making nations news the country need to be aware of what going on because its not right and it never will be. I just wait for the day there will be justice in the drama program and all the other programs going through the same struggle.
