What I think is particularly remarkable about this article is the sentiment about our increasingly interconnected world, and how the internet is contributing more and more to the shrinking of physical boundaries. Although my first instinct is to argue the vitality of human contact, I have to remind myself of how many hours I have spent watching vloggers and celebrities ramble on about the minutiae of their lives in online videos, watching again and again as if to remind myself that I am not alone and someone gets it, and scrolling through buzzfeed articles for something to post to my long-distance friends' facebook walls just as an excuse to remind them that I miss them. At a time in my life when I feel split between coastlines, the internet has become a vital part of strengthening the bonds between myself and those who I cannot imagine life without. The more I think about this, the more my vision of the world wide web evolves, to understand how it brings people together rather than how it pulls us apart. Artificial intelligence may have a long way to go before it can be a much less scary concept, but there is hope on that technological horizon, and the dedication which the scientists in this film display is proof enough that we may soon not be able to afford such a fear of this new age. Don't get me wrong: I'm just as haunted as the next person. But I still think there is something to be said of the unification this coming era may bring.
