Wider change in Hollywood sought after Academy reforms

New Pittsburgh Courier: The widespread outrage over two straight years of largely White Oscar nominees coalesced behind three damning, viral words: “OscarsSoWhite.” The hashtag, which activist April Reign is credited with creating, lent social-media unity to a tide of frustration that on Friday led to diversity reforms announced by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

Like many others, Reign celebrated the announcement. But only for a moment.

I cannot believe that the academy has life time spots. No wonder they vote for what they do. These are probably men who have been here for years. And adding only 3 spots... That's ridiculous. There should be more. And they should review their membership right now, not just every ten years, or we won't see change for years to come, despite it being begged for right now. However, I suppose it is good that they are taking on the fight against them with real change. If they didn't I'd worry about the future of the Oscars. And if next year people of color are not nominated once again, tenfold of respect will be lost.
I always ownder about the validity of a Academy itself, grading art. The idea seems so archaic to me. But I suppose it's better than the People's choice awards who voted for Fast and Furious and Meghan Trainor this year as their favorites.
