Academy’s emergency meeting over diversity
Variety: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has approved a series of major changes, in terms of voting and recruitment, also adding three new seats to the 51-person board — all part of a goal to double the number of women and diverse members of the Academy by 2020. The changes were approved by the board Thursday night in an emergency meeting.

Eh, I’ll believe it when I see it. It kind of ruins your outward front of proactivity if this is the 2nd year you haven’t had any actors of color nominated at your show. It seems to me like this is more them acknowledging that they got caught doing something wrong, instead of acknowledging what they are doing wrong. And So much is wrong. Of course it’s the big topic of awarding the talent of people of color, but we also have to look at what roles people of color are continuously cast as. There is still so much type casting in Hollywood. And then even when people of color are awarded, they receive almost know acknowledgement for their talent outside of that film. When Jennifer Lawrence began to win awards she blew up, she was in all kinds of films playing all kinds of characters. Where is Viola Davis, Where is Octavia Spencer, where are these people of color that have proven to be just as good as their white counterparts even in the eyes of the Academy?? It’s all so messed up. So deep
It’s good to know that the Academy is at least aware of the issues that the film industry has been hotly discussing recently. Bringing more diversity to the Academy is definitely a good choice. I do believe, however, that the root of the issue is not the composition of the Academy, but rather the availability of roles for minorities. A large majority of acting positions are created for white males. And who better to direct white males than another white male. Between the producers and the writers, more diverse roles need to be created. There is a huge benefit to having more diverse roles in that we are able to explore different cultures, issues and lifestyles. Isn’t this what art is about? I do appreciate the Academy’s effort (we’ll see if we actually have any chance for next year’s nominations, though), but some serious changes need to happen at the top end of Hollywood in order for us to see some positive change.
