Veteran artists collaborate on Quantum Theatre's 'Ciara'

TribLIVE.com: Two veteran Pittsburgh artists are venturing into unfamiliar territory with Quantum Theatre's latest production.

Actress Mary Rawson will perform Scottish play‑wright David Harrower's one-woman drama “Ciara” on a set designed and painted by painter, muralist, installation artist and printmaker Robert Qualters.

It is comforting as an aspiring theatre artist to read of consummate professionals with veteran reputations who still doubt their capabilities, even when approaching a project they are asked to do by people who trust them. That sense of responsibility toward their collaborators and friends, that looming worry that even after all this time this could be the project to prove to them that they are not invincible - that is still present, and I believe it is what makes a true veteran. After all, if they didn't think they had any room to grow, why would they still be doing this anyway? It's not exactly easy, and in no way is this a low stress field. These artists continue to create because they want to grow, want to see just what they are capable of. So often as students we dread that self-doubt, because we forget to consider that in a few decades it may be the one thing keeping us going. Belief in oneself is important, but we would have no need for that belief if we thought we were infallible. We are imperfect and human, but we are artists, and we make art to explain our imperfections. The fact that these artists, after decades of work, are still trying to explain their faults to themselves is more than endearing. It is inspiring, thrilling, and humbly reassuring. I can't wait to be an accomplished virtuoso with something to prove to myself.
