Costume Designer Janie Bryant on ‘Mad Men’s’ Timeless Style

Variety: The message to “Mad Men” viewers watching the AMC show’s season opener is clear: It sure didn’t take long for Megan Draper to adjust to life in the City of Angels.
What helped make the scene so memorable was the ice blue, itsy bitsy, teeny weeny babydoll dress worn by actress Jessica Pare.
Aside from causing fashionista fan girls to swoon across the Twittersphere, the episode also garnered costume designer Janie Bryant and her team an Emmy nod — Bryant’s fourth for the series and a category she won (with Le Dawson) in 2005 for “Deadwood.”

Mad Men is a great TV show, while I have not seen that many episodes, each one I have seen has well designed costumes and seems to really try to capture to essence of the 1960’s advertising world. The mens suits are tailored beautifully and it is so clear the costume designer, Janie Bryant, really looked into the details of the period and the care taken to even choose bras for the women that give the right shape. One of the great things about working in TV and Movies, that doesn’t necessarily hold true in theater is that they use vintage garments, like that ice blue dress Jessica Pare wore. In theater, vintage garments are generally to fragile to make it though an 8 show week for how knows how long, but are perfect for a day or two of shooting. Shopping or sourcing for Mad Men must have been an amazing job full of wonderful vintage women wear and beautiful tailored suits.
