California Incentives Bill Urges Tariffs to Curb Poaching of VFX Jobs

Variety: An amendment to proposed legislation to expand California’s film and TV tax credit urges trade action as a response to countries that have lured visual effects firms away with the promise of generous subsidies. The amendment calls call for a strategy that has been previously opposed by Hollywood studios, which have benefited from the availability of post-production subsidies in Canada, Great Britain and other countries. In late May, for instance, Sony announced that its Imageworks special effects facility would be moving to Vancouver, further eroding the once-thriving visual effects industry in Southern California.

I have witnessed the outsourcing of California's film industry first hand. A few friends and I were lucky enough to visit Sony Studios last spring break when we were in California. We talked to an art director who was working on a new Adam Sandler movie. He described to us how so much of the production side of films is being outsorced to other states and Canada. California is the home of film and production. I'm from southern California, and we thrive on that industry, it is a major part of our states identity and economy. When looking at California's longtime economic future, this bill would ultimately help our economy and hopefully stop the dramatic exodus of the entertainment industry from its home shore. It would be a sad future if Hollywood was merely a antiquated symbol of the film industry. I hope governor brown passes this bill and brings the visual effects industry back to California.
