hackaday.com: Are you guys tired of redesigned Arduinos yet? Usually we are, but [Ray] just released the SquareWear 2.0, and we have to admit, it’s a pretty slick design.
It’s an update to SquareWear 1.1 which we covered a year ago. That version made use of a 18F14K50 microcontroller, measured a tiny 1.6″ x 1.6″ and could easily be sewn into wearable circuits.

This is super cool, and I want a reason to have one.
I think microprocessor technology is going to start seeing a presence in theatre technology. I don’t doubt that wearable microprocessor tech will see theatre applications more regularly. I bet that soon we’ll see Arduino applications such as “costume control units” and “props table inventory systems.”
I have been interested in the lilypad for a while now, but now I think I'd prefer to get one of these. Wearable computing is up and coming, and these microprocessors are how it is going to continue improving. At Build 18 this past week there was a project that had lightup pants as part of a Lunar Gala fashion line, without technology like the SquareWear, this kind of project would be impossible or at the very least uncomfortable.
While I think that the progress being made with Arduinos is amazingly awesome, I don't know if electronics on clothing is going to ever pick up on every day clothing. I under stand its purposes for very specific outfits such as a costume or a fashion show. I'm interested in seeing just how long Arduino tries to push the wearable technology items.
You know when directors and designers ask for completely crazy things? Well I have been asked many many times for costumes that can light up or do something special. I always hated those requests because they were almost always really impossible for someone like me to do. When I did Pippin, I was asked to make the hands and hats glow, and one of the director's favorite ideas was microcontrolled hats. We ended up going with terrible blacklights and white hats and gloves, which looked semi-decent, but with this kind of wearable-microcontroller technology becoming more widely available, I hope I get the chance to use it. It's just such a perfect solution, and with an integrated push button...it's almost perfect! How much does it cost again?
