TDF Theatre Dictionary Celebrates One-Year Anniversary
Stage Directions: Theatre Development Fund’s Theatre Dictionary—a video tutorial series that presents a humorous but accurate definition of theatre terms—is celebrating its one year anniversary! The Theatre Dictionary now encompasses 43 terms, including the newest “Commedia dell’arte,” with a video that stars RuPaul’s Drag Race 5th Season winner Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales, her co-star in the hit NYC Stage production The Vaudevillians.

The concept of having a theatre dictionary is a great. In an industry where left is right and right is left, it's definitely important for there to be some sort of dictionary of standard terms that are used. As dumb as I feel saying it, when I first got into the school and was added to the "CMU Drama DPs 2017" Facebook page, I didn't know that DP stood for design production. It's things like that that show how important having a dictionary like this can be, especially in an industry that uses a lot of jargon and abbreviations while at the same time involving a large amount of collaboration; working with others can be very difficult if each side is speaking a different language. Having some sort of standardized dictionary seems to be a great solution to this though, and the fact that it's always growing is really important seeing as we're in an industry that is always changing and trying new things. I also really like the idea that the dictionary is a collaborative process, with definitions being provided by not only the TDF (Theatre Development Fund; they're the creators of the dictionary), but also by performing arts institutions across the country.
