Savvy Saving Bytes: Little did I know when I was a member of the stage crew in high school, that path could have led me to Carnegie Hall where I could be making a cool $400,000 Plus as a stagehand. To be more precise, in 2011 the five full time Carnegie Hall stagehands earned an AVERAGE of $420.000 in overtime pay and benefits. The ONLY employee who made more was the executive/artistic director, Clive Gillinson, who last year took home $1,113,571.

Wow...people sure like their money...Though Carnegie Hall could fire and hire new people for a cheaper price if they really wanted to. Why do you think Mexicans are blamed for stealing our jobs? Because they will do the same work at the same quality for a lower paycheck. That is a ridiculously high salary anyway. Teacher are paid around $60k a year, and they are doing more for the world than stagehands are. (weird that I say that as a theatre kid.)
I found this article to be so ridiculous. The was the union is acting is just so unnecessarily greedy. I mean, honestly, if 400K isn't enough for you, get a new job. Stagehands are very important to theatre, and they are the unsung heroes, but I don't think that, as Kristen said, they're more important than teachers who earn considerably less. Also, this sort of thing doesn't really help with the whole unsung hero thing, because now they just seem greedy. Unfortunately though, in this sort of career where the hours are this crazy, a union is important to make sure that the stagehands are being treated fairly. At the same time though, it should remember that earning that much may not be fair to Carnegie Hall.
