It's so difficult to imagine some of these iconic roles being played by another actor. We have become so familiar with Eddie Murphy being one of the main characters in Beverly Hills Cop that if it would have been played by someone else, numerous pop culture references would have changed and the career path of Eddie Murphy may have been different. This entire article highlights the concept that we associate actors with certain roles in movies, not roles with the movie. We want to see the big name so we can see who the star will try to be, not actually be that person.
The thought that someone else could have played some of these rolls is sort of strange. The difference in Beverly Hills Cop would certainly be the most pronounced, but even the casting of the Joker has become so iconic that it would seem that no other actor could have played the roll. I think, from now on, I'll pay some attention to the casting director when the credits roll.
