BACK TO THE FUTURE, MRS. DOUBTFIRE, THE STING, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, WAITRESS, TOOTSIE & More Coming to Broadway?

www.broadwayworld.com: As BroadwayWorld previously reported, 20th Century Fox recently formed a joint venture with top Broadway producer and Tony Award winner Kevin McCollum (Motown, Rent, Avenue Q, In the Heights), prolific film producer John Davis (Predator, The Firm, Grumpy Old Men, I Robot, Chronicle) and leading industry executive Tom McGrath, to develop live stage productions based upon the studio's vast library of films. Now according to the New York Times, Fox won't be the only major film studio with movie-based musicals in the woks in the coming years.

Now, it seems that there are less new, original works on Broadway than stories that have already been told. As I read more and more on the subject, I have started to realize that bringing movies to the stage just does not feel right. When the writer of the film thought of their idea, they intended it to be seen close-up and have the visual images fed to the audience. Theatre does not always do that. And even though Dan Jinks said that he was able to create an emotional song out of a difficult-to-reproduce moment in the move, it does mean that for every somewhat difficult thing to understand in a story, there needs to be a song.
