We spent some time talking about strikes in PMW the other day, especially about what to do/how to move forward when a strike occurs. It seems like the management at Roy Thomson Hall didn't have much of an option here. If they hadn't entered negotiation with the union, they would not have been able to host their events as planned, and likely would have lost potential revenue from that event. I understand why strikes happen, and that in most cases the union workers have legitimate concerns that are causing them to strike. However, I wonder what happens when the union members start asking for too much...what is the employer supposed to do? Take the union to court but not be able to hold events in the mean time? I'm not entirely sure how this works but I am really intrigued to know how strikes affect the employer. It seems like they never have a reasonable business option but to negotiate with the union.

Same here Shannon, when I read the article I remembered our class and started to think about what options or plan Bs they might have had. I however think that they might have had choosing non IATSE workers as an option, but due to the fact that this is such a large well known event, they probably wanted to solve the IASTE concerns before anything further developed. If they didn't strike a deal the event might have been able to occur, but there would also be a lot of bad press and protests from IATSE members occurring along with it that producers would not want.
