'Magic Mike' Musical Stripping Way To Broadway With Top Creative Team

Deadline.com: The creative team is in place to turn the hit stripper film into Magic Mike, The Musical on Broadway. The producers have set Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey to write the songs, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to write the book, based on the Steven Soderbergh-directed film that was informed by Channing Tatum‘s early days as a male stripper. Oh boy, this is one show that I certainly would never see. It seems now that every time some movie is successful it now deserved to be put on Broadway, which certainly is not always a good thing. It seems that Hollywood may be attempting to corrupt Broadway a bit because a movie about male strippers does not necessarily deserve to be a Broadway show, at least not in my opinion, but maybe I am wrong. For this time at least, I believe I am right.

Time and time again, it seems that recently Broadway and Hollywood have turned to each other to "borrow" from each other. I strongly believe that neither gains from this relationship. Also, I believe two people like Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey working on show like this might ruin their prestige among the theatre community and hurt their reputation. Writers and directors are willing to take on new projects because they can believe they can make something out of nothing. "Magic Mike" did not receive fantastic reception and the spark died fairly quickly, and I personally can say I am happy because of this. Producers should realize that they should bring a show to Broadway just because of a few headline names and sex appeal. For most of the potential audience of this show (teenage to young adult girls), we not go to experience the show, but see shirtless men prance around stage. What do you want as the future of theatre?

I feel like they have a strong team of designers set up to create this musical, but I am honestly afraid that this will turn out to being a huge joke of a musical. I am also very terrified to discover the book American Psycho, had been turned into a musical. It has been one of the most graphically violent and scarring books I have read and knowing the story truly horrifies me that the idea to create it into a musical existed. I have always felt theater was at times supposed to be there to entertain the audience, but more often than not its job is to take an audience and force them to see problems affecting current society. Granted this all depends on the playwright and the producers who agree to put on their pieces, but Magic Mike was written to entertain a group of people for two hours and not meant to be a story where it includes singing and dancing. Also the material both Magic Mike and American Psychic cover are more adult than often seen on stage. I understand Art is all about pushing boundaries, but there is a limit.
