The Bay Bridge's Crazy Light Show Has an Illuminating Documentary
gizmodo.com: Whether you think it's a fantastic expression of creativity, or a horrible waste of money, for the next two years San Francisco's Bay Bridge will be illuminated every night with 25,000 animated white LEDs. And that like all large-scale projects, there's a fascinating story behind it.

Although this project seems very creative and I was also amazed how much LED can create a dream-like and fluid-like feeling, I am doubtful about how they could raise up to $8.2 million when CA is struggling with financial debt. Also, looking at the comments, it seems that the light it only from one side, which will cost another 8.2 million dollars to decorate the other side. However, it still looks nice and I think this is very creative since San Francisco is well known for bridges. Looking at the flow of the lights, I could imagine a water falling down from waterfall and also a melody is coming from playing a harp. I think that even though there have been a lot of bridge lighting, I considered this lighting as special too. I think this dim, beautiful lighting can definitely soothe people who are going back to home from work even though it cost so much that caused some criticism.
I wish I could be in San Francisco to see this project in action! San Francisco is one of my favorite cities, and this project looks pretty magical. It almost reminds me of Christo's art, but in a more technological way. Any art that is done on such a grand scale, and in such a public venue, is usually controversial. Yes, this project cost an absurd amount of money, but I don't necessarily think that makes it a bad project. Everything in this world costs money. Maybe the 8.2 million could have been spent in a different way, but the people behind this project clearly did what they needed to do to raise the necessary donations for this project. So why not let them pursue their art with the money they worked hard to fund their project?
This looks really cool!!!!!! I dont know much about architectural lighting, but this reminds me of the George Washington Bridge in New York City. It is lit up every night, but on holidays the middle columns light up in different colors. I think it is really wonderful that I can see these little light shows outside my window. Maybe this is just because I love lighting, but I believe that it is particularly wonderful when lighting can be brought outside for everyone to see all the time.
I had commented on the last article about this, and about how cool this project is. After working more with LEDs in Rube and Spring Awakening, I appreciate even more the ridiculous scale that the Bay Bridge Project is in. I am in awe at the size of it, and I think that what the artist said about the transfixion the people get towards large sculptures like the bay bridge and luminescence of lights will make this piece world famous. I want to see it when it's up!
So I have read a few articles about the bridge over the past few months and been intrigued by the installation. I will say the video here totally got me pumped and inspired "way to go video editor and play with my emotions" but I like it. It is cool and I want to go see it! I watched some YouTube videos and thought it is really pretty and nice from the videos. So I am glad they did it, art always cost money so I say get over yourself people. 8.2 million does not seem like that much for what the insulation actually is. But what do i know I am a poor grad student.
