SOLT overhauls judging process for this year’s Olivier Awards

News - The Stage: The Society of London Theatre has confirmed it will introduce a new voting system for the Oliver Awards in time for this year’s ceremony. The changes will mean that producers and theatre operators in the commercial West End and major subsidised theatres will be given the chance to vote on who wins in each category. All members, apart from those who are affiliate and honorary, will be able to cast a vote.

This somewhat opening of the voting process for the Olivier Awards is an interesting acknowledgement that the members who make the shows happen are also very knowledgable and see a lot of theatre (it's democratizing the process a little, over the small selection committee model). I agree with the article, though, that there probably won't be a huge change in the results of the voting than who would have won if selected by the panel - at least, in this situation, they will be able to gauge the popular opinion and allow it to factor along with the committee of people who make it their duty to see every show. Does this mean that all members will receive Tony voting comps to all the shows on the West End, though? Otherwise, how can you ask them to vote when they need to see every production to make it be fair?
