Tennessee Women’s Theater Founder Receives TCG Grant
Stage Directions: Maryanna Clarke, artistic director at Tennessee Women’s Theater Project received a continuing education grant from Theatre Communications Group as part of their Leadership University initiative. As part of the grant Clarke will travel to Toronto to study the business models of three well-established and successful theatres there: Nightwood Theatre Company, Tarragon Theatre and Soulpepper Theatre.

I know that women's theatre gets a lot of support through grants and such, especially right now with all the hot-button women's issues stirring up controversy in the election, but the model of this grant makes it so much different than the grants other women's organizations are receiving right now. Having the opportunity to go and learn about business models makes TCG's grant so much more than just money because it allows Clarke to consider business models which will allow her to support her theatre and continue to produce women's theatre. This is exactly along the lines of the saying, if you give a man a fish, he eats for a day; if you teach him how to fish, he never goes hungry. Or in is case, if you teach a woman a business model, she never goes unfunded.
