I'm an interested Gentile. I don't know too much about Yiddish theater itself only some of the greats that have come from it like Stella Adler and the Marx Brothers. You can learn so much about an individual or culture by looking at its roots. I'm a little embarrassed that I don't know more about the Yiddish theater and its influence on American drama. I think Gentiles are sometimes guilty of subconscious antisemitism and choose to ignore certain parts of history and culture. The fact that most theater students or theater-lovers have heard of the Yiddish theater but couldn't say anything about it may be evidence of this.

I find that it is when companies take on projects like this that some of the most interesting pieces of theater are presented, reminding us of why we chose to do theater. The performing arts are, after all, a way for culture to express itself and reach out to people, outsiders or no. I'd love to find out what Yiddish theater is like and what it has to contribute to modern-day American theater.
