Rosco myColor: Prepare to Get Your Color On!

Rosco Spectrum: Wendy Luedtke is Rosco’s Color and Lighting Product Manager, a Lighting Designer, and a self-professed color geek. Wendy has taken the helm of Rosco Spectrum to introduce our latest tool for lighting designers: I am so excited to announce our new web tool, Rosco myColor. I have personally been using myColor every single day since we got it running in our super-secret internal beta testing lab. Every. Single. Day.

I have very little interest in pursuing light design, but I still appreciate this new tool. I wish there was a program or website that used these same principles in a more general sense. Perhaps fabric companies could use this model for textiles, or paint companies could do the same for paints. I think that something that allowed designers to upload, compare, notate, organize, and share research images. I would buy that app in a second.

This is totally brilliant. The old user interface that Rosco had was virtually non-existent, and I found myself just paging through color by its number trying to remember which range the greens were in, for example. This is a huge improvement for them, and is a good archival and learning tool. For example, by being able to save your palettes, you can refer back to your old shows, and remember where exactly you decided to use a specific color, and what you decided suitable complements would be.

Next up, an app? Yes please.

I am a big fan of this. I like the apps that exist that have a wide range of color on the iPhone, but i have been looking for something that provides the depth of tools this product provides for a while. An understanding of color theory can help you pick colors and know they will work well without ever having to shine a light. I like being able to use math like this to my advantage, and I cannot wait to play around with this!

This tool seems like it could be very useful for lighting designers. The ability to save collections of colors as well as quickly look up information on them could be invaluable. The only issue I see with the web app is that you could not trust the appearance of the colors on the screens as every lcd screen displays colors differently and so the color on the screen would not necessarily accurately portray the gel.

I agree with Hunter. The concept of seeing color on a display is not only hard to transfer to light - but you also have to worry about what type of monitor you are using. Every monitor is different and you never really truly know what color youre going to get. I find it easier you just memorize your favorites and when you want saturated blue to know that you like congo blue. this is a cool app to get in the general vicinity of where your ideal gel might be... but not precise enough for on the job usage.

This is a great system! I have worked with color samples and gel samples before and they are the BIGGEST pain in the ass. not only will this system help people be more organized but its a very nice way to give back to the environment. so that more plastic and paper arnt wasted.

This tool is great. I see alot of advantages to using this tool on a regular basis to plan for each of the shows. The article makes it sounds like there are many different way to customize the tool to best suit your needs; from comparing different reds, to deciding a color palette, and then to looking at pictures of colors. I can see that there are many features and exploration of this toll to come. I feel like this program will only continue to get better and better for each individual.

I also see how this could great benefit communication between lighting designers and the rest of the design staff. Quickly being able to email out the color palette and having a easy way for them to look at the color palette is immeasurably beneficial.

I just see this as a great use of technology to improve our efficiency.
