Funny Chekhov

Pittsburgh City Paper: While critical curmudgeons can poke holes in the "laughter through the tears" description of Anton Chekov's full-length plays as "comedy," no such linguistic legerdemain is necessary for his briefer works. Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre caps its Chekhov Celebration with Funny Chekhov: Plays and Vaudevilles by Anton Chekhov and an abundance of scenery-chewing.

Normally, I do not care for Chekhov so much. Even the initial words the author of the article, 'Anton Chekov's full-length plays as "comedy," no such linguistic legerdemain is necessary for his briefer works.'Already tend to turn me away from it. However, I find the idea of shorter more 'vaudevillian' plays way more interesting. I have to admit though, what really drew me to read the article in the first place, was the picture. The woman looks simultaneously powerful and elegantly evil (or at least slightly deranged). While the man, even though he has a gun pointed to his head seems not particularly worried and defiant as well. If the actors can convey this much with an online newspaper photo, it would definitely make me want to see the show.
