Spring Break Gets Tamer as World Watches Online
NYTimes.com: In this era of “Jersey Shore” antics and “Girls Gone Wild,” where bikini tops vanish like unattended wallets, it would seem natural to assume that this generation of college student has outdone the spring break hordes of decades past on the carousal meter. But today’s spring breakers — at least some of them — say they have been tamed, in part, not by parents or colleges or the fed-up cities they invade, but by the hand-held gizmos they hold dearest and the fear of being betrayed by an unsavory, unsanctioned photo or video popping up on Facebook or YouTube.

No surprise, but good to see it. It is unfortunate that there is a sort of censoring on spring breaks because I disagree with the principle of students still being on guard when they are on break, but it is always troubling to hear about the person who did not take care. I mean, not stripping on a beach is, to some degree, kind of common sense. But there are people who want to go out and have fun by their definition and they should be free to do so without worry. I mean, people being worried about getting sloppy over break is just sad since it seems they probably have been so much worse on their home campus. It is not much of a break if you feel less comfortable to do what you might want because of the media consequences.
Who would have thought that THIS would be the reason for Spring Breakers to begin to start making better decisions? My youth pastor always said, “Your Character is what you do when no one is watching”. Well, it is not that these students have developed better character, it is now they are just a feared of being discovered. I am not sure what lessons we have learned. It will be about 10 minutes before South Padre island has a “No Cell Phone” rule at all wet t-shirt contests. Then we can continue carrying just as our ancestors did in the 80’s.
