Smash producers get top award by gay media group

Reuters: The producers of the new TV musical drama series "Smash" were honored by gay and lesbian watchdog group GLAAD at a gala on Saturday that highlighted gay marriage and bullying. Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, film and television producers known for such movies as the Oscar-winning "Chicago," and "Hairspray" were honored at New York's Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, Media Awards.

Smash has done a great job so far at doing something that not many shows have done successfully or even tried to do: they've created several three dimensional, realistic gay characters. Specifically what I love about these gay characters and their situations is that they are not stereotypes and their story lines don't revolve around their homosexuality - they are real people with diverse interests and problems. This said their homosexuality is not ignored. They also portray them as being accepted by their peers. They are not met with opposition for that reason. I think this show is a really good model in those regards.

I love that Smash won an award. Shows with gay and lesbians are much more common now but "Smash" shows an average and normal gay relationship that many people don't get to see. I think that is greatly appreciated by the gay and lesbian community and I also think it is an educational opportunity for many that have a stereotypical view on what they think gay is suppose to be. I think this show is appealing to a lot of different kinds of people. I hope it has a long run.

SMASH is an amazing show. As a gay man I feel that the show has been very respectful when showing the relationships. The show has not ever used the stereotypes which is the key to their success. Many TV shows base gay characters off of stereotypes, and that is where they go wrong. Gay mean are very rarely anything like the stereotypes. I applaud SMASH for being different and for being respectful at the same time.
