'Smash' Creator Theresa Rebeck Steps Down as Showrunner
backstage.com: In a story similar to that depicted on the Broadway drama at its center, NBC's “Smash” is changing its behind-the-scenes star. Series creator Theresa Rebeck will step down as showrunner of the newly renewed musical drama, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

What this article informed me about the whole business of Rebeck stepping down is actually really surprising. I always thought, especially with a show this new, that the people that started it would stick around for more than a few months. I understand that the stars sometimes move on or are replaced, the production team usually moves along, that's usual. What I don't think is very common is this woman starting the three first shows and taking a step back. It makes me question why she is doing that, I guess that is just how it goes though. Smash is a great show with so much energy. I hope that it stays true to that energy in the coming episodes.
As a huge SMASH fan when I read this article I became extermely depressed that Theresa Rebeck will not be writing this amazing show’s second season. However, the article does say that she, “will remain on board as an executive producer next season and could potentially pen episodes of the series.” That news did cheer me up. This article also informed me that Debra Messing’s character, Julia Huston, is based upon Rebeck. Knowing this, I know understand how the character is able to give off a feeling of being a real person and not just a fictional character. It probably also helps that the character is played by Debra Messing, such a phenomenal actress. To be honest thought I did see this coming when the plot shifted from the primary focus being the creation of Bombshell to more on the character’s personal lives. In short I feel that who ever is going to be the new writer needs to put the focus back on Bombshell because that is what Americans want to see. I won’t mind the personal life drama if they are also able to connect it back to the production.
Goodbye Theresa Rebeck! You will be missed!
