Glad to see that there's a simple guide to this from sound design's perspective rather than music's perspective. I've seen Ableton used in applications from DJs to content creation for shows here at CMU to full orchestra playback on larger shows like those from Cirque and Dragone. Its grid-interface and focus on musical elements and components (such as being beat-based rather than time-based, and having advanced vamping capabilities) make a powerful tool to designers and music directors, although there has been a lot of fuss in the news of late about playing back music in our industry.
I'll add this one to the reading list.
