Costume Design Award Winners Round Up: Oscar, BAFTA & CDG
Clothes on Film: The votes have been counted, prizes dished out and winners’ speeches read. Now the Big Three honours have all been awarded it is time to list the lucky recipients and give them the hearty round of applause they deserve. First to be announced on 12th February was the BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) award for Best Costume Design, which the BBC typically and shamefully edited from their main broadcast, sandwiching it with Cinematography, Editing and other worthy categories ninety seconds before the end credits.

Having seen many of these films, I think that the awards have been distributed well. I didn't know that there was such a controversy over the wedding dress from the first Harry Potter movie. There is a fine line, that is understandable, but those dresses were just so identical that I'm going to have to agree that it is a copyright violation of some sort. Just too close.
On the other hand, "The Artist" was truly beautiful in its entirety. There was just so much grace in the wardrobe and I think that the black and white film only enhanced the clean lines and the unmistakable style from the 1920s. One scene where the main actress is pretending to be flirting with the actor by using his jacket, really embodied the spirit of the movie. It was an active movie, completely energetic and light. It told a story in "the old fashion way" and the costume just helped it's cause.
That wedding dress in Harry Potter is really alarmingly too close to the Alexander McQueen dress. It goes way too far, definitely beyond just "drawing inspiration." However, since that's not actually the movie she won the award for, I guess that nothing can really be done about that past transgression.
Another thing interesting to see highlighted here is the commercial costume design. Now that I know about it it makes total sense, but I would not have realized that costume designers could be recognized in the commercial context as well. And I always note the Swiffer girls' outfits in those commercials, that is a well deserved award!
And Boardwalk Empire deserves every award always. Many Hoorahs.
