Who Owns My Ticket?

NYTimes.com: AT this moment, all over the United States, consumers are buying tickets to games, concerts and other live events under the impression that they have the right to give away, donate or resell the tickets they purchase. They assume that they can do so whenever and with whomever they wish and (as long as they don’t violate the few remaining laws against scalping) at whatever price they choose.

This is an interesting concept and I do not fully understand why it is so important to limit the ability for ticket to transfer hands. I understand how it can be a security issue for airplane tickets. I do agree with the article that paperless tickets do seem to be limiting the consumer in ways that do not seem totally legal. Of course this opinion might change if someone could more fully explain why the paperless tickets are important.
