Students design show for CMU's Pausch Bridge
Pittsburgh Business Times: A new light show is debuting tonight at Carnegie Mellon University using the more than 7,000 LED lights adorning the Randy Pausch Memorial Bridge. Since the bridge’s dedication in 2009, in memory of Pausch a CMU alum and professor who died in 2008, the bridge’s lights have been coordinated for a show based on Pausch’s famous “Last Lecture.”

The PR for this class has been phenomenal. I was in this class last mini and we had a lot of fun working on our show and I am impressed how well someone got the word out about it. I've read a handful of articles from journals and newspapers in the area and there will also be an upcoming article in lighting and sound america in a month or two. It has been exciting to be part of the Guinea pig class and be the first students to design a show for such an important and exciting icon here on our campus.
It is really such an awesome opportunity here at CMU that aspiring lighting designers have the resources they have here. For instance, I dont know anywhere else where literally seven feet from the theatre building is there an opportunity to design like this. its easy to get sucked into the many hours of crew, and allison's seventyfour emails every day that one forgets to take a step back and remember how fortunate we are to learn and develop in an atmosphere like this. I am glad I am here and cant wait until I have the chance to play with the RP Bridge
What a great thing that this bridge can stand not only as an innovative memorial to Randy Pausch, but as a teaching implement- something he was all about. This is such an interesting medium for lighting designers to experiment with programming, and conversely, it seems, for programmers to experiment with visual displays. How long is this show up for? I wish the article had mentioned that. I would love to see these in action. I also found the captioned video really interesting, because I guess I never really thought that each light show was based on a metaphor from Randy Pausch's book. It gives a lot of insight into something I had just thought was pretty.
This is such a great tribute to Randy Pausch. I love the fact that we can have these kinds of things happening on campus that are related to theatre. There are so many ways to get experience and this is just one of them. This is a great exciting way for LD's to get to test their skills and creativity. I would love to get to help pout redesign the bridge one day, it seems like a real treat!
