I am intrigued by this announcement and the timing of this musical. The final installment of Rocky Balboa's story came out in 2006. Stallone is really milking it with how many incarnations this once good story has gone through. This is a good story but I will say that the issue is that we need to stop putting movies on Broadway and get better theatre writing on Broadway. This could be a good commercial success but it is not artistic. It lacks artistic integrity no matter how many tony award winners you wrap it in.
Again? Why?? I am sure that this is a strategically picked movie that would offer a great story for broadway, but please, I do not understand why more original musicals are coming out. Could it be that we are undervaluing the art of writing, in substitute for new commercial, technological and modern forms in the arts? Who knows. I just am absolutely positive that there is far to many unoriginal adaptions making its way to stages, no matter how fun they will be nothing new is cutting its way through. It seems as though no one want to take the risk, and in some cases, maybe that is the truth.
This idea can only end poorly.
Im all for the Rocky movie industry but I can hardly imagine an actor with the looks and accent of Stalone singing his heart out to an audience. These two simply do not meet in my head. Of course, who am i to judge. Who would have thought that a barber who slits his costumers throats and then proceeds to turn them into meat pies would be a hit but look what happened to that!! I do wish that Broadway would return to its roots and produce some truly new shows, but alas. We shall see.
Now wait just a hot second there all you naysayers. This could be awesome. Remember how everyone thought Legally Blonde would be the worst musical ever? And then it wasn't. It may not be the best musical ever, but I bet more people here like Legally Blonde than a lot of other musicals. The idea of integrating sports and live entertainment is catching on, and tacking on a money-maker like Stallone and a famous movie means a lot of money will go into this. And look at the creative team so far. While of course they could absolutely destroy a classic film, this could also be the next big show that pushes the limits of Broadway. (Rocky Turn Off the Dark?)
I am so glad that there are so many people at work to make sure that no successful 80s movie goes without becoming a Broadway musical...
The only way I would ever see this is if Sylvester Stallone himself starred in it and did all the singing and dancing alone. Then again, maybe this production would be so ridiculous that it would be enjoyable.
