Tax breaks have been key to reviving area's film industry

StarNewsOnline.com: North Carolina's film incentives program is essential to keep the industry flourishing and competitive, five experts said during a discussion Wednesday morning.
Their comments were part of "A Beautiful Story on Film?," the last event of the year for the Greater Wilmington Business Journal's Power Breakfast Series, held at the Wilmington Convention Center.

The article does a good job of pointing out what a lot of people miss - the tax credits aren't paying movies to come to the area, instead they're charging them less in taxes when they do come and spend money there. Given a choice between 100% of nothing and 75% (or even 60%) of a large number there shouldn't even be a need to think about it, you go with the credits and hope you get 75% of a lot more next year. The only question remaining is just how deep you need to go, if neighboring states with a similar infrastructure can cut deeper then you either have to match them or let them have the business from the filming.
