latimes.com: A longstanding artists community and celebrity vacation destination, Santa Fe has a new rising star -- one it hopes will help the state regain its footing as a leading production destination for filmmakers.
This week, Santa Fe Studios, a nearly $30-million production facility in the southeast part of the mountain town, will open for business. Built in line with the city’s traditional pueblo architectural style, the 65-acre studio includes two 19,275-square-foot soundstages with lush offices and dressing rooms, access to electric cars and ultra-high-speed broadband technology.

The idea of such a large and state of the art film studio in Santa Fe is great. With that said it will be interesting to see what kind of support structure will grow around it. The talent for scenery, props, and so on will need to be brought in or everything will need to be shopped out. I wonder if the talent pool in Santa Fe is large enough to sustain a facility this size and it will be interesting to see how many people move there to fill that demand. Also it will be interesting to see at what percent of capacity this facility is running after a couple of years. It is also interesting to see that states are no longer able to court the film industry as they once did with their tax incentives. This seems to be a step toward a decentralization of the film industry that can happen now in this digital age. People can work from anywhere in digital editing and Santa Fe from what I am told is a beautiful place.
