Steppenwolf Avoids Stars, Making Its Own Instead

NYTimes.com: "When “Superior Donuts” opened on Broadway this fall, it did so without the box office benefit of a famous cast member. Instead, it arrived in New York with something almost as valuable: a Steppenwolf pedigree."

Just as with the article on how the various shows have done, this also helps to show that you can't always predict what will get the audiences into the seats. A very successful show in Chicago moves to New York and they think that they want to replace the two leads, perhaps that was necessary, perhaps it would have done well with the original leads still in their roles. It's always a gamble unless you've pre-sold your entire run, all you can do is put together the best show you can, promote it as well as you can, and hope that the audiences will come.
