In The Wings - Fight Director - December, 2009
American Theatre Wing: "Fight director Rick Sordelet creates the action in Superior Donuts that is an integral part of the storytelling; demonstrates the visual and audible illusions of onstage fighting; breaks down the sword fighting staging in The Royal Family; and explains the purpose of a fight-call and the importance of safety."

The job of fight director has always been one of the positions of theater that I've always found incredibly fascinating. Beyond having to create physical conflicts on stage that are safe, they have to create ones that the audience believes are real and still entertaining to watch. Simply having two actors on stage going at it would not actually resembled a fight in the eyes of an audience since people are use to far more style and grace given the examples of combat they have grown up with. A fight directors job seems to be to balance the perceived, the safe, and realistic in a way that does not detract from the play, but adds to it effectively.
