Rock legends headed to Broadway

Variety: "Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins are coming to Broadway, with the tuner 'Million Dollar Quartet' headed to Gotham for a planned spring run.
'Million Dollar' has been playing to strong response in Chicago since it opened there in October."

With a lineup of songs like that it seems like it's designed to appeal (at least in part) to a pretty wide cross-section of the public, assuming it's done well it seems like a show that is as guaranteed to make money as anything is in theater.

Has Broadway run out of original ideas? After Jersey Boys, Movin' Out and Mama Mia, who will be the next music artist to be turned into a musical. But I guess what it boils down to is what will the public pay to come see? We need some one with an original idea PLEASE! I know they are out there, I saw two musicals that had great potential this summer.

I agree with M. Cody, theater has become making artist's music into musicals, or redoing old ones. As our society moves more and more toward the sciences, keeping theater and the arts in general up to date is more important than ever. The arts are vital to keeping a sense of culture and community alive in our country.

This show seams like they picked the best songs form each of the people that they are represented. it think that this will be sort lived it is a show that will stay going for a short time and then end because not many people will wont to go to it.

I don't think that many people will want to go see this show. I agree with Cody, that the shows just seem to be more and more unoriginal on Broadway; its sad, really.

I actually know a few people back in Chicago who got to see this while it was playing there. While I wasn't able to go and see it myself, the response was generally positive from these people and they highly recommended it. It is true that a lot of musicals have been about redoing artist's music, it would be interesting to do something more current, and that has to do with issues people deal with on a daily basis.

START MAKING ORIGINAL MUSICALS AGAIN. PLEASE.

I feel like every week I end up saying the same thing because more and more of the cookie-cutter shows are coming out. Jersey Boys is a great show, but we don't need 50 different reincarnations of them. If this trend keeps up, I really am going to have my goals set on doing off-off broadway shows that are more interesting, innovative, and contemporary. I guess I am just not a typical audience member.

At least Little Mermaid is closing.

While I agree with most of the comments above, I do believe that theatre such as this has value. It attracts an audience that might not otherwise be drawn to the theatre. By connecting the theatre to another facet of entertainment, there is always a chance to open the world of theatre up to those who might never find themselves in an audience. More specifically, ,many of my friends back in Chicago were able to see this while it was there and aid that it was artfully done and was a good time. I guess time will tell.
