It begins with his father's move to America to study and his meeting with Barack Obama's mother, before covering the events of the young Obama's life."
When I first saw this, I thought it was a joke. But it isn't... I wonder how the Obama campaign and Obama himself view the musical. This could be huge in the US almost regardless of who wins. It would be interesting to see how it comes across the ocean.
This is extremely intriguing. I do not know how it will be received and I think that very much depends on the results tomorrow. It is an interesting idea and I believe it has the potential to be very powerful, however I worry about its reception at such a politically charged time in history.
It'll be interesting to see if the show invites will stay open if Obama doesn't win (I know I know, just saying) but it sounds like an intriguing story nonetheless. Like "W" in reverse.
I think everyone saw this and thought this was a joke. Yes, it probably holds a strong message or whatever, but really it's a product of Obama-mania right now. I guess I'm just growing tired of everybody in my face about Obama that this musical seems nothing more than another ploy to keep the Obama train going in case he loses.
This is funny. Really funny. It's always cool when a bunch of people come together to do a new work that has a message for their community, but it seems that this is just a hero play. Like Alex said, it reminds me alot of the kind of thing they're doing with "W". Some political leaders will be remembered for a long time, and some will just fade into the background. Either way, whenever someone looks at this play in a few decades, they will either have no idea who Obama was, or who McCain was.
Alright, this is wrong. Obama spent a long time trying to get people to not look at him like a celebrity, and then this happens. I am all for Obama's story being told, but musical form does not make sense to me. With things like this out there, is there any chance that Obama if he's elected will actually be able to be taken seriously by other countries? The guy isn't even president yet.
I think the concept for "Obama, The Musical" is a decent one. This campaign, more so than any other one has become more and more about entertainment and this is one of the next logical steps. What I am struggling with is the actual format of the show and its apparent 'cabaret' style incorporating lyric changes. I would be interested in seeing a completely original version of this and then perhaps seeing that show make its way to the US.
This has to be a joke. I doubt this musical has artistic merit. It will be difficult to keep the show from getting campy and turning into a giant political cartoon.
Wow this was definitely a surprise...was not expecti8ng this turn of events. And i thought that Broadway was crashing along with the economy!I am curious to see the response in the U.S.
Really? Reallee? Realleeeee? I mean, I guess out of the respect that I have for my dawg Barack, this seems like it might be worthwhile, but it just seems kind of strange. I mean, it would be good in the current context that we will have and I guess it would be decent, too.
It's not wrong. This is a show about Kenyans celebrating a man who they look up to. This has a completely different connotation than if Americans wrote and produced it. There's a completely different context.
This will probably do well in Kenya regardless of whether or not Obama wins or loses. Not speaking on behalf of anyone making this show or living in Kenya, a lot of the buzz he's generated is based upon looking at what has been accomplished in so little time. It's just not very frequent that you see a Presidential candidate with an identifiable ethic background. If the next wildly successful candidate is Irish, you'll probably see something similar.
This is a fun idea but I don't think we have to worry about much. It's a cute idea that will have limited popularity and publicity. It's kind of ridiculous that things have gotten to the point where they're making a musical about a presidential nominee. Crazy.
I saw the title for this and straight up laughed. I think that satire is great to a point - but this musical being legitimate seems to be a mockery in and of itself.
I've read a lot of analysts in the past who have commented on Obama's image in the eyes of the American people. A lot believe he has taken on this "super hero" role, and that he is more of an icon than a legitimate leader. This musical emphasizes that image of Obama. It's not wrong however.
"McCain comes in as the villain, the chief villain. His supporting cast are George Bush and Sarah Palin who are standing in Obama's way," Alright, listen, I think that this is wonderful that a play of Obama's life has been produced but making McCain the villain is absolutely ridiculous. I am upset because the story of his "life" could be portrayed without bringing other peoples morals and beliefs into the story and not accounting them.
I wonder what this does to his campaign? Have any American pundits picked up on this? It seems to crazy to be true, but at the same time very cool that he is so nationally known that he gets his own musical. Best of luck to Obama tonight and to his new soon to be hit musical!
WOW. This looked like a joke at first--it's hard to believe that it's an actual show. I hope it's well received; but, it does look like a rather odd subject matter for a musical. Still, it's intriguing and I hope it goes well--no matter the outcome of the election.
God save us. I'm a little more than tired of all this hype on Obama. Tonight should be interesting. It is kinda cool that It's in Kenya and that he does have ties to the people of Kenya so that makes it better, but I still keep thinking of "Shrek the Musical on Ice!"
