Texas Ballet Theater cancels live music

The Dallas Morning News Performing Arts: "The dance company's decision, which is part of its emergency efforts to conserve funds and raise at least $2 million by mid-September, came as a surprise to the Dallas Opera Orchestra and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Both orchestras were scheduled to perform live music for dance performances."

The use of canned music in live entertainment has unfortunately been growing recently. Orchestras are very expensive, especially when you consider that they aren't really seen. It's all about production value. I think that arts purists wont stand for recorded music for long though. It's a short term solution to the long term problem of higher production costs and lower donation amounts.

I suppose if the money's just not there, something has to be cut. I don't really think there's anything superfluous in live theater, so no matter what gets the ax, it's going to be disappointing. A lack of live music is definitely a drawback, but I believe that if I were watching a ballet captivating enough I wouldn't even notice after a while.
