Disney conducts research with CMU

The Tartan Online: "Carnegie Mellon University has welcomed Disney, the entertainment giant, to campus to fund a research laboratory under a five-year contract. The lab is situated close to the School of Computer Science complex, where robotics and animation technologies will be developed for Disney’s entertainment empire."

Wow that really shows how strong out robotics and computer areas are. Carnegie Mellon's robotics and computer areas seem to be getting a lot of attention lately, all of this will help the school gain more recognition. Maybe if drama needs any designers they will call up drama.

this is very exciting for the cmu community and for disney, as well. it's great that engineering and robotics are getting this much opportunities to bring our reputation and recognition even more. i remember from the last lecture from professor randy pousch, that he used to have close relationship with the company to develop and create more characters.

I hope that people look past Disney as the "big, mean giant" and see what an opportunity this is for not only the school but the students as well. The funding that will come in for the program will probably be more than gracious (even though it may already be). Not to mention it's satisfying to have a purpose behind all your homework. (Not like the robotics team isn't already ruling the world). Not to mention, I want to be that parent who gets to take their kid to Disney World and say "see that? I helped make that."

This sounds like another great example of what makes CMU such a unique and interesting campus. The continuous collaboration between art and technology is where the future lies, and it is great that CMU students will have access to something like this.
