Atlanta Theater Begins 10-Year Project on French Playwright
Backstage: "'In the Solitude of Cotton Fields,' written in 1986, is the first of six plays by the late French playwright Bernard-Marie Koltes that Atlanta's 7 Stages Theatre plans to produce during the next 10 years. It opens this weekend."

I find it fascinating the way in which a work of art can take on a completely new meaning just by placing it in the context of a different location. This is such a good example of the way that the audience's experience and cultural background heavily influences what a work of art is ultimately capable of producing and changes the meaning completely, even without the creator doing a thing. While I think it would be wonderful to hear the original script, I think a new translation is also really vital to helping to bridge that gap between the two cultures and convince American audiences that French culture can be relevant to us too. I'm glad that this project is so forward thinking and long-term because I think the problems caused by this administration regarding our relationship with France need to be solved as soon as possible in order to avoid diplomatic disaster and cultural downturn.
