What a nice feel good article. Now that we have ventured off into our "theater school" mentality, we are quick to forget where we come from. We were those kids, who stayed late in the theater, who sang as if we knew it all, who thought that our role in the play was the best and that everyone though so as well. We were going to be on Broadway. Now looking back, it is a truly humbling experience to have had that mentality and then gone down a different path. "High school" theater is quickly turned into a negative remark, but how soon have we forgotten that there would be few of us without that experience.
It is interesting reading this perspective on high school theater. I have seen or experienced some of this drama in high school. The sentiment that even with everything going poorly, the curtain still rises and the show goes on seems to be popular, and usually whatever gets pulled together by opening night goes well.
High school theater is underrated. I love going to high school shows. Everyone loves what they are doing and has a passion for theater that seems to fade in the professional world. In this program, a lot of people can be heard saying "Its just a school play.", but shows are taken much more seriously. In high school, the plays really are "just a school play". Its not about good or innovative theater, its about a group of kids having fun. The audience does not enter the house with extremely high expectations, instead the audience is there supporting and cheering for the show.
This definitely shows the kind of work that goes into make simple theater. It was new to me to find that boys are hard to cast. back at home there are lines to get casted. Is this just a Pennsylvania thing or was my high school an exception. Huh. However, I really enjoy high school theater because those unexpected mistakes or wrong cues are exciting to watch. Well at least it is for me. It is magic because this is where many future professionals in theater start their career.
When knowing so much about the nature of theatre and how many hands it actually takes to create a show high school musicals seem to be more magical that Broadway. High school musicals are not creates by professionals in the industry that have eveything at their fingertips, but instead by some willing and dedicated students and teachers. Theatre is not easy even for the professtionals so for high schools students it is a real challenge. Even though high schools don't have the best acting or design elements to them there is always something freash exciting about watching students do something they love. I don't know about anyone else but thats I came to find my way into doing theatre.
