Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) is the 2008 recipient of the Carnegie Science Center’s Information Technology Award. The award recognizes the ETC for enhancing the Western Pennsylvania economy through innovations in technology. Recipients will be recognized at a ceremony at Carnegie Music Hall on May 9, 2008.
Every year since 1997, the Carnegie Science Center has given more than a dozen awards annually in categories including “catalyst,” “corporate innovation,” “entrepreneur” and “environmental” to individuals, educators, and companies in the western Pennsylvania region.
“Now, as we prepare for the New Year, the receipt of this recognition will spur us on ever more to continue our work of developing and implementing interactive technologies designed to entertain, educate, and give people of all ages memorable and hopefully transcendent experiences,” said Don Marinelli, executive producer of the ETC.
Students and faculty in the ETC have designed interactive games, software, robots and media for museums, companies, and organizations across the country. On Jan. 14, the ETC unveiled My StoryMaker, interactive software that allows children to create their own stories, at all 18 branches of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. The ETC was established in 1998 as a joint program between the School of Computer Science and the College of Fine Arts. Among the ETC’s collaborators and sponsors are Walt Disney, Industrial Light & Magic, Intel, Electronic Arts, Kodak, Microsoft, MTV U, and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
