National Endowment for the Arts budget cuts should be met with outrage, not complacency
Courier-Journal: "Tucked away in the thousands of pages covering $3 trillion worth of proposed expenditures was a $16.3 million cut in support for the National Endowment for the Arts. That would reduce its operating budget from $144.7 million during fiscal 2008 to $128.4 million in 2009."

I completely agree with the idea that the enemy of progress is complacency. But I think we have to rethink many other areas of our budget first. Yes, it's terrible for the arts to get money taken away from their budget, and the NEA is a really important organization. However, I'm much more concerned about our defense spending and poor relief systems when it comes to determining the national budget. I think it's important for people to speak up, to be outraged, but I also think you have to pick your battles if you want politcians and bureaucrats to listen.
It's really sad that the NEA budget is getting cut with almost nary a second thought. I agree with Corinna in the sense that one should prioritize, but the fact is that a million dollars in the NEA can go much further than almost any other government organization. Art is one of those things that gets cut first from every budget, but is most fundamental to the cultural foundation of everythign.
