It seems that many regional theaters across the country are experiencing some difficulty lately. That may be a broader statement than necessary, but up in New Jersey this spring, I went to a rally to 'save' The Papermill Playhouse, a prominent regional theater in my area. Papermill was experiencing a 'fiscal crisis' that was blamed on inept board members as well as a season that was 'too experimental'. One of the reasons Papermill is able to get back on its feet after almost canceling the end of its season last spring is because of a commitment for wider known, more family friendly shows. But, is the point of theater just to put on what people are familiar and comfortable with? I guess if it keeps you above water financially, yes.
However, I do like the idea of pairing with an educational institution to keep a theater going. That way, you are still spawning new and interesting works, enriching the community and promoting artistic growth while still being able to continue performances.
