Plays, not musicals, top Broadway's autumn

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "A monster and a mermaid would seem to have the new musical market cornered on Broadway this fall, but it is plays rather than musicals that -- surprisingly -- are dominating the first half of the season."

What I think we're witnessing is the first time in a long time that art (and I mean that in the purist sense of the word) is overtaking money in terms of priority in what is being produced and performed theatre-wise in this country. For too long, shows that were chosen for production were chosen mostly for purely financial reasons. Let's just hope this is a change for the future, and not just a blip on the broadway and off-broadway radar. Don't get me wrong, musicals are wonderful when done well, but too many good plays have been forgotten and not placed on the biggest stages and instead, musicals like, oh, say "The Little Mermaid" and "Cats," which do I suppose have some artistic merit, which have only a fraction the artistic vision as plays such as Pigmalion or Cyrano have.
