Lords Of The Smoke Rings

Live Design: "Look Solutions played a major role in providing atmosphere for the London production of Lord of the Rings, currently playing at London’s Drury Lane Theatre. Almost the entire range of Look Solutions smoke machine products are employed in a highly complex and closely controlled network of smoke production, from the 9000W Orka to the newly released Tiny F07 battery operated fogger."

Wow~ The current various theatrical technologies improve very fast. Not only moving light, hydraulic equipment but also FOG is improving. Then, the “big” production may be completely fulfilled.
Those foggers are amazing. They can be controlled so precisely, the height of ankle and knee. Moreover, the hurt is minimal. From now on, the designers and directors may have larger imagination about the stage under condition of no worry about budget.
The effect designer was also thinking thoroughly, using fans to more control the fog and to protect the actors. The set is complicate, so they might confront the cabling problem. It is pity the article does not mention about the issue of air conditioning from above the stage and from the house. Maybe there was not such worry.

So often I find myself seeing or participating in productions that want to use fog and smoke for a specific purpose, but are thwarted by the inaccuracy of the machines involved. The fog either concentrates too low or rises up too high, dissipates too fast or too slow, is too conentrated and distracting or too subtle and unnoticable. It is amazing and exciting to think that soon all of these problems will be a thing of the past and that within several years, it might be possible, even probable that I will be using 15 different smoke machines in one production.
The mini battery operated machine looks especially cool.
