Colleges look for hints of trouble students

Post Gazette: "A student taking English literature fails an exam and stops coming to class. A freshman who split with his girlfriend seems moody and reluctant to leave his dorm room."

"...a state panel in Virginia that investigated the murders of 32 students and professors recommended, among other things, that campuses require employees and residence hall staff to notify their schools of "aberrant, dangerous or threatening" behavior and, if it persists, that the counseling center and student's parents be alerted."

I hope that this isn't a new concept. Why would you have an RA if not to keep an eye on students just to make sure that everything is okay. It seems like this should be where housing staff responsibilities start. If you see someone unsafe, or making others unsafe, you should step in. It seems fairly logical. The RAs here for the most part keep really good tabs on their floor residents, I just assumed it was the same everywhere.

I understand the whole VTech thing, but college students are adults, they should learn to deal with their personal problems on their own. People are asked to take a year off in Purnell when they have "unprofessional" behavior in their auditions. If they don't learn to overcome their issues on their own, they will never be able to learn that in the real-world.
