SeaWorld Orlando announces grand opening for Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin
www.themeparkinsider.com: SeaWorld Orlando today announced it will officially open its newest addition, Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin, on May 24, 2013. The attraction is replacing the old Penguin Encounter and is billed to be the coldest theme park attraction in the world. SeaWorld says its construction is right on time and offered us these two sneak peeks.

Well this is intriguing. I not sure what it is. Is it a ride, a movie, an interactive walk though? Also it's said to be the coldest penguin exhibit ever but I have yet to see any penguins. The video talked all about the animation but it said nothing about real penguins, and I'm sorry but if i'm going to pay all that money to go to sea world, I wan't to see some penguins. Also, I'm a little confused as why a penguin exhibit needs coaster cars (or whatever that illustration was supposed to be). It's a penguin exhibit. Why can't be just walk?
I feel the same way as Jenni... This sounds awesome, but what exactly is it? There's definitely a ride involved, and maybe also an interactive walk-through, but does this mean there are fake penguins and real penguins? How exactly do the creators of this exhibit plan to keep their creation cold enough to satisfy the needs of penguins who are used to the climate of freezing Antarctica without using up all the energy in Orlando? Will there be a roof over the entire expansion? The advertisement sure got me excited about the work that SeaWorld is undergoing, but it also seems to leave out a lot of key information.
When I was 10 I went to Sea World with my cousin and her girl scout troop. We spent the day at the park and slept over in the building that housed the Penguin Encounter, so we got to watch the penguins before we fell asleep. That was one of the coolest experiences I had as a kid. Now that it's getting re-vamped, I can't wait to see the finished product! The Encounter was already extremely enchanting, so I'm sure this up-close interactive look at the penguins will only enhance that experience!
This sounds awesome. I love penguins. The article says that this will be the coldest theme park in the world. I'm wondering how cold it will be? Being Orlando, if visitors need something to keep warm will SeaWorld supply it? While this sounds cool, i don't know if i want to pay admission and then have to buy some marked up blanket or sweater that i would then have to take around hot Orlando for the rest of the day.
Oh the money that we spend on theme parks. No I'm not being negative, I just wish that some of this money could be spent to protecting some of the endangered species. Nevertheless it looks pretty cool. I remember going to Sea World when I was younger also, I can't really remember much that I saw other than the dolphins, mainly because I have picture with them,, but I know that I enjoyed it.
Also from the videos and from other articles, I think that during the tour they will be using animations with Puck for educational purposes. However after the tour people will be able to see real penguins. I can't imagine having a tour at Sea World without real animals somewhere during the experience, even if it is after the educational tour. If not it would be quite pointless.
I am very curious to see how they are going to create the world's coldest exhibit. From the pictures, it looked like it was outside, and I'm pretty sure the weather in Florida is different from the weather in Antarctica. I'm sure they give us more information on it in the next few months. I agree with Jenni about the real/fake penguin question. I'm sure we'll see penguins in that viewing area, but the ride and the walking-among-the-penguins sounds like that would have animations. I know when I was a kid, I always chased birds on the beach. Just think, hundreds of children chasing those poor penguins. Those birds cannot be real. I feel like this is going to be a lot like Disney's Soarin' ride. It gives the idea of reality, but it's not reality at all. And what's with the name? Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin? I never thought they could make penguins sound so dangerous/Star Wars-y.
YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!! This is so exciting!! I hope to be able to go to sea world again to see this exhibit. I love sea world so much and to be quite honest this will be such a great refresher. Sea world gets so hot and having a colder exhibit will help cool you off. Kind of like going to see the whale exhibit is a crowd favorite because the whale splashes the audience which refreshes everyone. Also, to just have a cold climate exhibit in Florida is interesting. I can't wait to see how this plays out. Also, PENGUINS!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
I would love to go see this just because I love penguins too but I also found the animation process interesting too. In foundations of drama two my circle group has been researching realism as well as naturalism and it is interesting to see the way the animation process has been trying to find a mixture of the two things.I think that in current theatre we face the problem of how close to the truth of real do we want to go as well as the idea that if we do go so close to the truth of real life how it in effects distances yourself form what is real. I also found the animators attempt not to make the penguins too human an interesting thing. I think that in animals and animation we face the idea of making animals too like human but in theatre there is often the held belief that humans are animals with animistic traits. In the end of their process I feel like they did not succeeded at their attempts to make the penguin less like a human because simply trying to have children relate to puck the penguin they are making him too human.
I remember once I went to the Central Park zoo and gazed for a while at the penguin encounter. Fascinated by the whimsical creatures before me, I was transported to the continent at the bottom of the world and completely engulfed in the environment.
All of a sudden I was snapped backed to reality when I saw a panel of the horizon swing open and a man with green overalls came out holding a hose. He proceeded to spray down the fake rocks the penguins were lounging on and wash their feces into the drains at the end of the exhibit. Occasionally, a penguin would get in his way and he would just nudge it to the side with his boot.
I sat there and observed this man for a while and then I realized that this person was standing in the middle of one of the world's greatest cities, inside of an enclosure with what appeared like 80 penguins of varying species(something a large majority of the population of the world will never see), and the only thing this guy cared about was spraying down poop.
I realized I never wanted to be that jaded.
I've always been quite interested in theme park and attraction design. This is a pretty cool concept (wait, was that a pun?) especially if it really is the "coldest theme park attraction ever." It might be a nice way for people on a really hot day to cool off from the hot Orlando sun. I really hope that there are real penguins, because if not it really defeats the purpose of Sea World, which I feel is to be part zoo and part amusement park. Also, I wonder how the penguins will be housed, as the weather in Florida really is not their native habitat at all. Also, I'm pretty sure penguins smell really bad.
