The Rise of the New Groupthink

NYTimes.com: SOLITUDE is out of fashion. Our companies, our schools and our culture are in thrall to an idea I call the New Groupthink, which holds that creativity and achievement come from an oddly gregarious place. Most of us now work in teams, in offices without walls, for managers who prize people skills above all. Lone geniuses are out. Collaboration is in.

While I certainly understand the value of independent thinking, working, and creating, I still feel that group work can be useful. I don't think that any company is doing themselves any favors by prescribing to one methodology or the other. Some people work better in groups and some work better alone, really it's that simple. By including both forms of work and allowing some leeway for individuals, a company can benefit from productive, creative thought developed from different types of work environments. Excluding one or the other is dangerous.
