Nancy Faust transformed the sound of baseball

Chicago Reader: In 20 years, the Secret History of Chicago Music has never covered a stadium organist. I’ll admit, that’s not just because there aren’t many of them—it’s mostly because I’m not a huge sports fan. I’ll roll a bowling ball every once in a while, and I don’t mind a baseball game on a nice day, but that’s as far as it goes. I realize this makes me a heretic in the midwest, but I’m not alone—when researching this story, I discovered to my relief that Nancy Faust likewise wasn’t big into sports growing up.

The Public put on a nice enough production of the 1997 Alan Menken and David Zippel cartoon musical back in 2019 in Central Park, but it was a one-off amusement that included hundreds of members of local community groups. Still, I saw promise in it.

Owen runs the family business disposing of animal carcasses on county highways and Jaki assists him as court-mandated community service. The first step in her redemption requires Owen to put his life in Jaki’s hands, watching the road while he scrapes frozen fur off the asphalt. With McIntosh’s signature deadpan incongruity, a frightening valentine to Midwest isolation unfolds: glittering, jagged, and written in blood.

Church Production Magazine: Most churches are streaming now, which means they likely have two cameras that capture sermons. If that’s your church, I’d guess someone has asked you about IMAG.
