Paul Schrader Thinks AI Can Mimic the Best Filmmakers
www.indiewire.com: Paul Schrader may be spending a bit too much time on the computer. Though the septuagenarian filmmaker rolled out his latest project, “Oh, Canada,” only last year, Schrader is already hard at work generating new ideas, not just for himself, but other legendary cinematic artists as well. Taking once again to his beloved Facebook page, Schrader shared in a post that he’d been experimenting with ChatGPT and was shocked to find how developed it had become.

I will admit that I have never used ChatGPT, so I have no firsthand knowledge of its accuracy or creativity. However, I have read articles about it and heard about it from friends, which has given me a basic understanding of ChatGPT’s basic functions and typical answers. The way Schrader is describing his experience with ChatGPT is interesting because it is the opposite of what I usually hear about it. The things I usually hear are that the AI writing recycles or combines existing storylines in a boring and nonsensical way that resembles previously written storylines. I’ve also been told that the AI technology has some limitations as far as expanding ideas beyond the typical, for example, generative AI can’t produce a picture of a ‘glass full of wine’ because all the reference pictures available are not full glasses of wine. However, I do understand what Schrader is getting at; AI will never go away and we as artists in the industry will need to learn how to regulate the use of generative AI early on, in order to keep up with the changing field of technology and innovation.
This article made me laugh a little. I think it is exciting to see and test a lot of ChatGPTs or Microsoft copilots to see the outcome of your question and to see how well they answer it and how well they can fix anything that you give them however, I think that that, because it is using a specific database and using the knowledge that is given to them what they are going to produce, will be something that some people might not think of immediately but given time they would get to I also believe that when people post about their opinions on ChatGPT or copilot and that their outcomes and how crazy it is, it is interesting to me because it’s been 2-3 years of having this AI help and it is still so shocking that with each version it gets better and how it can change peoples perspective of it. I saw an article about how horrible ChatGPT is for the environment and ever since then I have not used it and I wasn’t using it frequently. I would just ask it questions to help give me ideas or help fix some of my grammar, but I have entirely stopped it because I I think that using other websites or other help is better for the environment which already is a plus.
